What causes gum disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection that affects the gum tissue. Gum disease can typically occur due to poor brushing and flossing, resulting in an over-accumulation of plaque.

Plaque is a sticky biofilm that contains bacteria, and this bacteria feeds on the leftover food particles on the teeth. As the remaining plaque hardens, it becomes tartar, or calculus, which is impossible to remove unless it's done by a dental professional.

Symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen, or puffy gums
  • Bleeding from the gums, especially when brushing or flossing
  • Bad breath that won't go away
  • Tender or sore gums
  • Shifting or mobile teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Receding gums
  • Teeth that appear long

If you have any of the above symptoms, don't hesitate to contact us today to learn more about how we can help improve your periodontal health. Untreated gum disease can lead to numerous health concerns, such as tooth loss, widespread infection, and heart disease.
