Dental Cleanings & Exams in Colorado Springs

At Springs Family Dental, we believe that good dentistry starts with preventive care that includes patient education. We understand that patients who are better educated about their oral health tend to take better care of their smiles.

The first step to healthy teeth and gums is practicing good at-home oral hygiene, like daily brushing and flossing. When coupled with routine visits to the dentist for cleanings and exams, you can have a healthy balance of home habits and regular in-office dental care. Regular dental cleanings are crucial to catching small oral problems before they snowball into costly headaches.

This is why preventive dentistry is so important to keep up; we recommend visiting Dr. Michael Terveen at least twice a year, or more as advised. If you develop any issues in between visits, we will be able to catch them and treat them immediately.

What does this mean for you as a patient? It means that we can treat oral health issues that are less invasive, more comfortable, and less costly. Skipping your dental check-ups could create the perfect environment for problems like gum disease to take hold, which no one wants. By staying on top of things with general dentistry in Colorado Springs, you pave the path to a healthy and strong smile for a lifetime.

Dr. Michael Terveen loves getting to know his patients and taking care of their entire family through gentle, efficient, and high-quality general and preventive dental care.

At Springs Family Dental, we maintain our community’s oral health by being proactive rather than reactive. We can help you save money each time you visit us.

Comprehensive Exams with Your Colorado Springs General Dentist

Cavities and tooth decay are prevalent problems that most adult Americans deal with.

Unlike other diseases and infections, dental problems often don’t display symptoms or only mild signs. As long as you keep up with your six-month dental check-ups, we will be able to catch these issues quickly.

Don’t wait until you have tooth pain or bleeding gums to decide to see the dentist. We are always happy to arrange an appointment around your schedule, but regularly seeing patients is for your benefit, not ours. Early preventive dental treatment is not only more suitable for your oral health, but it also helps your wallet.

During your comprehensive dental exam, Dr. Terveen will perform a visual inspection of your teeth and gums, looking for any dental abnormalities. He will ask if you have noticed any changes or pain in your mouth. Your general dentist will check each tooth and note their condition while also looking for signs of gum disease. Every dental exam includes an oral cancer screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

While you probably already know that brushing and flossing your teeth are the cornerstones of effective at-home preventative dentistry, have you ever stopped to consider how the other structures in your mouth play a role in maintaining your overall oral health?

Brushing your tongue, for example, is one of the best ways to keep bad breath away and protect your mouth from unwanted bacteria.

woman brushing her tongueBenefits of Brushing Your Tongue

Your Colorado Springs dentist recommends brushing your tongue daily if you want to have:

  • Fresher breath
  • A tongue that looks clean and avoids stains from dark-colored food and beverages
  • Fewer bacteria in your mouth
  • Less frequent opportunities for cavities and gum disease to develop

If you’re new to brushing your tongue, don’t worryーyou don’t need to spend any extra money or acquire any new equipment.

While you can choose to buy an inexpensive tongue scraper for only a few dollars at your local drugstore, you can actually clean your tongue effectively using only the toothbrush and toothpaste you already own!

It takes less than a minute to sufficiently brush your tongue each day, and doing so can make a significant difference in your mouth’s health and in how fresh your breath feels. For the best oral health possible and an outstandingly clean smile, you should also brush the roof of your mouth at least once a day.

Our team at Springs Family Dental agrees with the American Dental Association’s recommendation of brushing twice daily for two minutes and flossing once daily to maintain good oral hygiene.

Oral Hygiene Tips for a Healthy Smile

Only use a toothbrush with soft bristles, and brush your teeth gently. Scrubbing or brushing too hard can damage your enamel and irritate your gums, leading to gum recession.

It’s time to change your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed and worn.

You can use fluoridated toothpaste, toothpaste for sensitive teeth, or any products that have the ADA Seal of Acceptance. If you need recommendations, your dentist will be happy to offer suggestions for what will best suit your unique needs.

Though brushing and flossing are essential for well-maintained teeth and gums, routine dental exams and professional cleanings are integral to oral health and wellness. During these appointments, your dentist checks for abnormalities and can provide prevention, early detection, and treatment for dental problems. Also, your dentist or hygienist can thoroughly remove excess plaque and tartar from the teeth and along the gumline, reducing the risk of decay and gum disease.

Our Modern Dental Equipment Means Better Service

We use a Cone Beam CT to take 3-D images of your teeth and gums; it allows us to identify any areas of concern quickly. Our ability to view your mouth and gums inWoman looking at her teeth in the mirror after cleaning at Springs Family Dental 3-D provides clarity and precision in diagnosing any issues.

Our general dentist uses intraoral cameras to take real-time images of your teeth and gums allowing us to get a good look at your oral structure and also show you what we see if we find an issue. Intraoral cameras are tiny and can get into areas of your mouth the human eye can’t see easily.

Modern dental equipment makes it easier for both you and Dr. Terveen to make the best decisions about your dental care.

We Provide Gentle Dental Cleanings

You might think you do an excellent job of brushing and flossing; in fact, your teeth look bright and strong, your gums are pink and not swollen or bleeding. You’re not experiencing any dental pain. So why should you get a dental cleaning every six months? While we commend your efforts at home, they are best served when done alongside regular dental cleanings.

Despite our best efforts, we still develop plaque that our toothbrush and floss cannot reach. Once it stays on your teeth long enough, plaque calcifies into a mineral-like substance called calculus or tartar. At this stage, only a dental professional can safely and gently remove the tartar through the use of special dental instruments.

We provide gentle teeth cleanings at our Colorado Springs dental office so that you don’t have to worry about hidden bacteria or infections that could spring up and create a dental emergency.

Healthy Teeth Start with Healthy Gums

Patient's after teeth whitening at Springs Family DentalAlmost half of all US adults over the age of 30 have gum disease—and don’t even know it! This is one of those dental issues that show very few if any, signs that something is amiss. When we diagnose gum disease early, we can easily treat it. The main problem with gum disease is when it’s left untreated; it gets worse very quickly.

As your gentle and highly skilled dentist in Colorado Springs, we worry about your oral health and work with you to prevent gum disease altogether. The only way we can do this is by seeing you regularly. While gum disease typically tends to have mild or no signs, it can start with bleeding gums. Your gums might also be unusually tender or swollen.

Don’t ignore these signs, or hope that things will get better—call us so we can make a dental appointment with Dr. Terveen as soon as possible. While some health issues can resolve themselves, dental problems rarely do.

If gum disease progresses, you may start to notice pockets of pus around your teeth on the gum line. You may have chronic bad breath that never goes away. Your teeth might appear to be growing longer because your gums are receding. These are all indications of late-stage gum disease—and can lead to tooth loss.

At Springs Family Dental, we will do everything in our power to reverse your condition, but it is always easier to prevent gum disease than to address the damage it causes. Gum disease is a severe infection that impacts your general health and well-being. Studies now show a connection between any infection in your mouth and the development of severe disorders in your body, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and more.

Just like you can’t build a house on a crumbling foundation, you cannot have healthy and strong teeth without healthy gums.

Digital X-Rays | Springs Family Dental | Colorado Springs, CO

Digital X-Rays

Dental x-rays are a quick and easy way to give us a world of information about what’s happening inside your mouth so that we can best diagnose and treat you. X-rays allow us to see cavities that are just beginning to form, cracks or deformations of your tooth, and many other dental ailments.

Digital x-rays have a number of additional benefits. For starters, they use considerably less radiation than standard x-rays – as much as 90% less! They are also viewed on a computer monitor, which gives us the ability to zoom in, enhance, and rotate the image for better viewing. Since no chemicals are used to develop digital x-rays, they are better for the environment as well.
