At Springs Family Dental, we believe that no one should suffer because of dental pain. If you find that you are experiencing pain due to a tooth that is irreparably damaged, we can help.

A dental extraction is the removal of a severely damaged or untreatable tooth. This can be caused by tooth decay from insufficient oral hygiene, damage from an accident, or a variety of medical conditions.

Our ultimate goal is always to allow you to keep your natural teeth, but if we find that we cannot treat your tooth and restore its normal functioning and appearance, then an extraction may be necessary.

When Do We Perform a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction may be necessary for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common reasons our Colorado Springs dentist recommends a dental extraction include:

  • Damage to a tooth that can’t be repaired with a crown or other treatment
  • Damage to the root of a tooth
  • An infection or other situation that puts other teeth at risk
  • A failed root canal treatment
  • Preparation for orthodontics (crowding)
  • Preparation for dentures (removal of unhealthy teeth)
  • An impacted or otherwise problematic wisdom tooth

Different Dental Extractions for Different Situations

If we have exhausted all of our treatment options and find that your tooth is causing you unnecessary pain or discomfort, we may schedule an appointment to extract the problem tooth. As always, an extraction is the last resort at Springs Family Dental because our goal is to help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth extractions are usually one of our last choices for treatment. At Springs Family Dental, we like to keep your teeth as healthy and as strong as we can, even if that means performing root canals or other dental procedures to strengthen or stabilize your teeth.

However, there are some situations where a dental extraction is necessary. Below we’ve listed a couple of situations that might require a dental extraction.

You have no room for wisdom teeth.

If your wisdom teeth are overcrowded or infected, Dr. Michael Terveen, our experienced dentist, may recommend a wisdom teeth (tooth) extraction. Millions of Americans have wisdom teeth extracted every year, so it’s a fairly common procedure.

It's your preference as a patient.

Some patients may choose to have a dental extraction over a root canal or other dental procedure that is meant to save his or her tooth. This could be due to budget issues or simply because the patient doesn’t wish to have a root canal. Dr. Terveen wants every patient to enjoy good oral health, so if a patient is hesitant about a particular procedure, we are happy to discuss possible alternatives.

Your tooth cannot be saved.

If a tooth has reached a point where it cannot be repaired or saved by our dentist, we may have no other option besides tooth extraction.

Linda

I drive an extra long amount just to go to this office because everyone is very kind! Dr. Treveen explains everything he is doing before and during the treatments that helps lower anxiety. I really appreciate him letting me know I will hear a crack, or whatever before it happens. He even called me to check up on me after my procedure and nobody does that anymore. He never seems rushed, is intelligent, gentle as can be, communicative and kind! His front desk- staff was very kind and patient even when people were waiting while not ignoring the other people waiting. Great job!
